Delta's First Flight Attendant Uniform on Loan to the Breman Museum in Atlanta

While our museum gets a makeover, you can still see some of Delta's history in person. The Breman Museum just premiered a new exhibit, Return to Rich's: The Story Behind the Store. The exhibit chronicles how Rich’s Department Store grew into one of the most influential and beloved institutions in Atlanta before being absorbed into Macy’s in 2005. In 1940, Delta's first flight attendant winter uniforms were purchased at Rich's and cost $110.

t is seen here displayed between the jacket worn by Margaret Mitchell to the premiere of Gone With the Wind and the "Rich's Green" uniform worn by elevator operators in the downtown Atlanta store. You can see part of the 40 feet long mural, Fashion Through the Years, celebrating the store’s 75th anniversary in the background. The uniform and insignia, loaned from our collection, was donated to Delta by Laura Wizark Baker, Delta's first flight attendant instructor. The Return to Rich's exhibit is open now through May 27, 2014.

Here, two flight attendants model the uniform with Delta's First CEO CE Woolman. For more information about Delta's early flight attendant uniforms check out our Propeller Era Uniforms
